Huawei's upcoming operating system to be called Ark OS, could run Android apps better, Hóngméng OS

Huawei is in the midst of a crisis, and that may be an understatement. The Chinese telecommunications giant recently faced a ban on using a Google-licensed version of Android moving forward, as per the demands put forth by the US government. 

Now, as spotted by Android Headlines, less than a week past on May 24, Huawei has trademarked multiple names with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) that are Huawei Ark OS, Huawei Ark, Huawei Ark Compiler, Ark, and Ark OS. Of course, mentions that these trademarks do not confirm the new filings to be Huawei's upcoming Android alternative, so there's no guarantee on that. But the timing of filing these trademarks do point out that Huawei is accelerating on this matter and we might soon see the new OS in action.

Hongmeng OS is an Android-app compatible cross-platform operating system under development by Huawei since 2012 towards their future products.To date and despite speculation, the company has not yet publicly designated an official name on the release of the operating system.

 According to multiple sources, this new OS is likely to be called “Hong Meng” (鸿蒙) in China and “Oak OS” or “Ark OS” for the overseas market.

It will run Android apps but may not be Android-based

WinFuture obtained some alleged screenshots of this Ark OS and it’s pretty clear it can run Android apps, complete with standard Android permissions. That’s pretty much a no brainer because, as the likes of Samsung’s Tizen OS and Jolla’s Sailfish OS or even Microsoft’s Windows Phone proved, HongMeng wouldn’t survive without a massive number of apps. Especially the most popular ones.

What’s still not certain, however, is whether HongMeng/Ark OS itself is based on Android or if it simply has a compatibility layer for Android apps. The latter, while possible, is extremely tricky and our bet is on a modification of the Android Open Source Project or AOSP.
